• Alternative Character Interpretation: When Uncle Jed learns he has consumption and won't be able to take the children, he hides it from them and only says he changed his mind and will allow them to stay with the Ingalls. Was he hiding his sickness to keep them from suffering for him, or did he want to let them think he had changed his mind by his own accord so that they wouldn't resent him anymore?
• Fridge Horror:
  • Jed spends a lot of time with James and Cassandra, which includes several times he hugs and kisses them, even after he finds he has consumption. If his consumption os tuberculosis, which is now known to be contagious, he could have infected them at any moment.
  • Jed's idea of showing his affection towards James and Cassandra is to shower them with generous gifts and offering up anything they want. Had he got his way and raised them, he might have turned into horribly spoiled brats.
