YMMV / Little House On The Prairie S 4 E 3 My Ellen

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Did Mrs. Taylor intentionally place Laura's things at Busby's place to frame him for Laura's disappearance or did she randomly place them there and Busby found them by accident? For that matter, how conscious was she of what she was doing? On the one hand, she makes a conscious move to get rid of Laura's belonging after kidnapping her, on the other hand she buys a doll at the Mercantile and casually talks about her daughter as if she's still alive.
  • Iron Woobie: Laura. She loses her friend and gets blamed by her grieving mother during the funeral, and nobody tries to protect her there. Then she gets kidnapped by a grieving Mrs. Taylor and kept locked on the cellar for days. Still she gets to keep her head on the place until she can find a chance to escape, and when Mrs.Taylor catchs up to her at Ellen's grave, Laura manages to snap her out of her Sanity Slippage by pointing to her daughter's grave and get her to accept that Ellen is indeed dead.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: At Ellen's funeral, when Mrs. Taylor starts yelling at Laura and blaming her for her daughter's death, nobody does any effort to stand up for her or comfort Laura, who only gets consoled after she and her family arrive at home and Charles reassures her that it wasn't her fault.
  • The Woobie: Busby is a Kindhearted Simpleton who wouldn't harm a fly, but some men are convinced he might have something to do with Laura's disappearance. Then Mrs. Taylor places Laura's things at his shack, leading the searching townsmen to chase him and while running away, he's shot by Ellen's father, who somehow convinced himself that Busby might have been involved in his daughter's drowning too. And after almost dying, he's still roughed up by a desperate Charles. Thankfully, he survives and Laura befriends him afterwards.
