YMMV / Little Dogs on the Prairie

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The show's theme song. It makes it obvious that the show will be both fun and educational.
  • Cult Classic: Although it's not very well-known, Little Dogs On The Prairie has its fans, and is considered one of the very few good Christian cartoons besides VeggieTales.
  • Fridge Horror: At the end of the "Lyin'" segment, there is a song and during it we see Tom Trailmix leaving Sport's birthday party after being paid by Hollister. However, as soon as he is out of everyone's view, he pulls off his Latex Perfection mask to reveal a rough-looking criminal underneath. He plans to make off with the bag of money (though he did earn it by at least putting on an entertaining show for everyone as promised) but is apprehended by the Sheriff. This implies that Sport and his friends never met the real Tom Trailmix after all. Or maybe they did, but he isn't all he appears to be. Either way it's a troubling twist.
  • Funny Moments:
    • In "Lying", Patterson looks through a catalogue to try to find a good birthday gift for Sport and has this to say about one potential choice:
I could give him a toothpick. (he checks the catalogue) Whoa, not at those prices!
    • In "Cheating", Patterson complains about Miss Kittey not being able to give him free candy after getting his hair styled due to running out of it before the latter has to leave for her second job as a substitute teacher.
Patterson: (picking up each object) All I got was this comb, and this hair dryer, pair of scissors, barber pole, a couple of straight razors, and this chair. But still it's not the same!
Gilroy: With all of that you could open your own barber shop.
Patterson: Well, if I did, I'd have plenty of free candy to give out!
      • This comes back as a Brick Joke at the end when Miss Kittey gives someone else a free lollipop.
Patterson: Hey, you said you were out of those! Hey!
    • In "Stealing", Hollister walks right up to Gilroy's home and steals a boat by pulling it behind him (and begins singing "Sailing, Sailing" when leaving). Cue the reveal that Gilroy saw all of this from a window.
Did Hollister just steal one of my boats?
    • In "For the Love of Sport", Hollister asks Sport about his crush and points out the signs saying "SPORT HAS A GIRLFRIEND" (yes, in all caps) with one word on each sign. Sport is annoyed as he wanted to keep this a secret.
Sport: That's the last time I tell Mr. Gilroy anything.
      • Even funnier is the fact that Gilroy made merchandise with the phrase on it as shown a bit later.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • In "Stanza By Me", Hollister is at first freaked out by the fact that Stanza the snake was the one who replied to his job offer. Stanza assures Hollister that he does have the skills to run the telegraph office and the stereotypes the latter heard about snakes don't apply to the former. Hollister then decides to give his new employee a chance as a result and is able to overcome his prejudice (which also makes the ending even sadder).
    • Hollister getting the real Tom Trailmix to show up at Sport's birthday party in "Lying". When Patterson is surprised at this happening, he gets this explanation about what events Tom will make appearances at:
Hollister: Holidays, grocery store openings, even birthday parties for little dogs who have been hurt by someone who lied to them.
      • Following this, Patterson apologizes to Sport for lying about knowing Tom Trailmix and is forgiven.
    • The song "Love Is" counts as this due to the lyrics. The music video makes it even sweeter by showing a blue male spider preparing for a date with his pink female spider love interest and imagining them falling in love, getting married, having offspring, etc. before he heads out on said date with her.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In "Stanza By Me", Sport invents a phonograph with which he is able to preserve Stanza's singing on vinyl record. Darcy remarks "Wow! That's the kind of thing that will never be obsolete!", with the joke being that at the time the video was made, vinyl indeed had been replaced by cassettes and compact discs. However, in recent years the format has made a comeback and so now the line isn't as ironic, especially since CDs have actually faced a backlash of their own in part due to the Loudness War affecting the quality of CD playback, among other factors.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The Downer Ending to "Stanza By Me". After Stanza has left and is unable to be found, the other residents of Prairie Town regret having been unable to overcome their prejudice against snakes and not believing that Stanza was the one singing opera despite Hollister telling them this. The last shot of the episode is of the townsfolk sadly listening to a phonograph recording that Sport made of Stanza's singing.
    • Sport's devastation at finding out that Patterson lied about knowing Tom Trailmix during his (Sport's) birthday party in "Lying".
Sport (as tears run down his face): Not only do I not get to see Tom Trailmix, but I look like a fool in front of my friends. You lied to me, Mr. Patterson! (He begins walking away.)
    • The last scene of "For the Love of Sport" shows Gilroy visiting the grave of Millie, a girl he had unrequited love for.
Gilroy: Always loved you, Millie. Always will.
