YMMV / Liquidation

Go To

  • Ass Pull: The guy who has managed to fool the police and counterintelligence forces for many years gets spied on by his hysterical girlfriend. And doesn't realize it until she confronts him.
  • Spiritual Successor. The plot of the 1979 Soviet miniseries The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed is also centered around figuring out a conspiracy in a 1946 Soviet city, with the Old Cop, Young Cop team solving the crimes. But To Be Lawful or Good is handled differently, with Zheglov in The Meeting Place planting evidence to catch a thief and Gottsman in Liquidation insisting on having a lawful reason to jail the criminals. Moreover, here the young cop turns out a Deceptive Disciple and the real Big Bad of the series.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • The mass arrest of the Neighborhood-Friendly Gangsters' bosses is portrayed as a tragic Miscarriage of Justice (and leads to Gottsman's conflict with Zhukov). However, some viewers have pointed out that these crime bosses' main redeeming features are not being part of the Academic's gang and treating Gottsman as a Friendly Enemy, while in all other aspects, they are still crime bosses and their arrest, while maybe not a good strategic move with the Academic on the loose, is them getting their just deserts.
    • To some viewers, Chekan and Ida are so despicable with their ruthlessness towards anyone except each other that their Together in Death scene, complete with swelling tragic music, feels undeserved.
