  • Accidental Aesop: Physical media is superior to online streaming. If the network goes down or the content gets removed from its streaming service, you can always count on putting a disc on your player to continue enjoying your favourite shows or movies.
  • Anvilicious: The movie does not hide its contempt for society's increasing dependence on technology, to the point Clay straight-up says to Danny toward the end "I am useless without my phone."
  • Critical Dissonance: Critics gave the film a fresh 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, with much of the praise going to the cast. Its audience score, on the other hand, is at 35% as of this writing, with many criticizing the lack of explanations for much of what goes on in the film, as well as the slow pacing, the more unlikable characters, and the film's occasionally on-the-nose dialogue. Its ending is also a very big divider even amongst those who liked the movie.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Fans of Sam Esmail's previous work Mr. Robot have been much kinder to this film that other audience members, if that show's subreddit is anything to go by. It certainly helps that the two works are heavily implied to be part of a Shared Universe.
  • Squick: The scene when Archie starts pulling his teeth out of his mouth.
