YMMV / Le Grand Meaulnes

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Meaulnes' main motivation for leaving Yvonne the day after their wedding guilt at having inadvertently had a relationship with Valentine and wanting to repair his mistake? Or was he in such haste at least partly out of a sense of restlessness and wanderlust? Was he perhaps disappointed in that things had changed at the Sablonnières estate since his first visit, and therefore more eager to leave? Does he really feel, as he tells Yvonne, that he is not worthy of her, and does that drive his departure, or is this just an excuse?

  • Mainstream Obscurity: The Christmas 2012 issue of The Economist described Le Grand Meaulnes as "the most influential unread novel". (This would apply mainly in the Anglosphere and most certainly not in its home country).

  • Tear Jerker: Yvonne de Galais' untimely death, which is soon followed by that of her kindly old father. When Meaulnes returns to the Sablonnières estate, he catches on to what happened, sparing François from having to break the news to him and he breaks down.
