YMMV / Law & Order: Special Victims Unit S1 E14 "Limitations"

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Is Jennifer’s refusal to turn in her rapist due to her forgiving him and wanting to keep him safe or, as one of the other victims theorizes, does she just want to keep him under her control as a passive aggressive form of revenge?
  • Draco in Leather Pants: In-Universe example. Jennifer's view of her rapist is a bit....skewed. She seems to be wearing rose-tinted glasses and seems to think he's a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds for what he's been through, namely being raped in prison and becoming a paraplegic due to an accident when he was working as a bike messenger. The simple fact he gave the most basic of apologies and prayed with her is enough for her to think he's a completely changed man. This despite the fact he showed no inkling of wanting to turn himself in, felt bad about his crimes, or even planned to stop his crime spree (he was ready to go for number four when he was arrested on an unrelated charge and sent to prison) until faced with one of his victims. It suggests he's not quite the remorseful rapist she paints him out to be and she's seeing what she wants to as a coping mechanism.
  • Moment of Awesome: Cragen for calling out the commissioner.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: The episode had the detectives rushing to catch a serial rapist before the five-year statute of limitations ran out. The prosecutor tried to indict the rapist using his DNA profile but the court wouldn't allow it. In real life, New York State courts have since ruled that DNA indictments are permissible and the law was rewritten in 2006 so that the statute of limitations doesn't apply to first-degree rape.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Jennifer can come across as one. She's a rape victim who staunchly sticks by her principles as a Quaker to name him, having prayed with him and forgiving him for what he did afterwards. Were it only her feelings involved, it would be one thing. But there are two other women he raped and she refuses to say who he is even to help them, making her seem like a Holier Than Thou hypocrite who just wants talk about forgiveness and compassion without really showing it to others. It's telling she's willing to show it to her rapist but not to anyone else in the episode, including her fellow rape victims, instead showing Condescending Compassion to them even as they beg her to help them.
