• Jerkass Woobie: Many of Selby's characters are both despicable and pitiful.
  • While Harry Black's behavior makes him completely unsympathetic and largely deserving of his bloody end, it's also clear that he acts the way he does because he lives in a society that forces him to hide his homosexuality and to be in a sham marriage that he resents.
  • Tralala is a thoroughly vile character as well, but there's also the fact that her life circumstances forced her into a life of prostitution from her early teens on, if not earlier. The movie portrays her more sympathetically, emphasizing the Woobie side over the Jerkass.
