YMMV / Larry's Adventure

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Despite his father dying at the hands of a dangerous enemy, Larry isn't that emotionally affected by it all things considered. Which isn't to say that he's apathetic, but his emotional displays are few and far between, as well as fairly muted given the severity of the situation.
    • The same could be said for Mallow's death, though it's at least justified since none of the heroes are really familiar with him.
  • Anticlimax Boss: Bowyer gets beaten in half a page despite the massive threat he poses. The Axem Rangers are defeated in even less pagetime than that. And Yaridovich loses his fight with the heroes even faster. He doesn’t even get to attack!
  • Continuity Lockout: Readers unfamiliar with Lemmy's Land's lore and site culture will be confused by quite a few aspects of this fic, such as Wart being Bowser's brother, Plit being the name of the Mario universe, and DAD being its creator deity. The Deviantart version alleviates this somewhat due to the author’s notes clarifying things for readers that aren’t familiar with the website.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • One of the threats Larry's party must overcome is the Pringle King, a seemingly ordinary Goomba with a crown that transforms him into a powerful beast. While his empowered form's a lot more mundane, Megasparkle Goomba hits a lot of the same beats.
    • In chapter 8, Larry comments on how he feels safe going to Rogueport, since no one will recognize him due to the Koopalings not being used in many Mario games. Come New Super Mario Bros. Wii and beyond, that's no longer the case thanks to the Koopalings coming back with a vengeance, to the point that they're playable in Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros.
    • Kamek defeating the entire X-Naut army with a single spell was a mere plot convenience back when this fic was written. Over a decade later, this is exactly how Kamek asserts dominance over the Penguin Kingdom in Illumination's Mario movie.
    • When Grodus sends the heroes to Rayman's world in order to protect it from the forces of darkness, Larry complains that it's barely a Nintendo place. Two Mario and Rabbids crossover games later (with Rayman himself being DLC in the sequel), and his complaint would end up being a moot point. Even funnier is the fact that they come into conflict with the Rabbids themselves.
  • So Bad, It's Good: To say this fic is juvenile and unfocused is an understatement, but it certainly isn't boring. If anything, it perfectly captures the spirit of Lemmy's Land's site culture during the early 2000's, as well as the hyperactive creativity that fueled the imaginations of its young users.
  • Squick: The heroes go inside of what they think is a giant Thwomp statue, only for it to turn out to be the corpse of an actual Thwomp, complete with bones and organs. P.T. of all characters is disgusted.
