YMMV / La Llorona

Go To

The Film:

  • Complete Monster: Don Enrique Monteverde was the former dictator of Guatemala, responsible for the genocide of the indigenous Mayan Ixil people. Convicted of genocide with the conviction later overturned by corrupt courts, prompting the haunting of La Llorona, flashbacks reveal Don Enrique ordered mass slaughters of the Mayan people, having his forces completely exterminate entire villages with torture being common. Enrique himself participates in such raids, having one Mayan woman's children drowned before her as an interrogation technique before executing her, who would become La Llorona.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Enrique crossed it either when he ordered Alma's children be drowned in front of her before shooting her himself, or simply when he committed genocide.
  • Only the Creator Does It Right: Not one specific person, but an entire ethnic group. The myth of La Llorona comes from Hispanic culture, and this film is almost universally considered better than The Curse of La Llorona and any other American La Llorona film.
  • Signature Scene: The entire climax, culminating in the death of Don Enrique Monteverde.
  • The Woobie: Alma/La Llorona. Thanks to her Adaptational Heroism, she's not responsible for the deaths of her children, and she was forced to watch them being drowned before being executed herself.

The Myth:

  • Moral Event Horizon: La Llorona arguably crossed it when she killed her children out of anger at her husband.
