YMMV / L'elisir d'amore

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Nemorino believes that Stalking is Love, given that he constantly pursues Adina when she says no, chases her instead of going to see his uncle on his deathbed, is willing to use an elixir to force Adina to love him, and wants to die as a soldier if he can't have her.
    • Since Adina admits early on that she enjoys pursuing a new man to make an old one jealous, it's hard to imagine that she really loves Nemorino. Instead, she's just jealous that things didn't go according to her plan.
  • Fridge Logic: Does anybody really believe that Nemorino and Adina will actually have a long and happy marriage once their infatuation for each other wears off, given that Adina has a history of unfaithfulness and Nemorino would rather die than live without her love? Not to mention the other differences in their characters: Adina is scholarly and Nemorino can’t even write.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Dr. Dulcamara is a charming, charismatic Snake Oil Salesman. When Nemorino asks him if he stocks the elixir of love, Dulcamara turns from brief confusion to taking the idea and running with it, successfully selling Nemorino a bottle of wine as the "elixir". Nemorino is so confident in its magic that he does win over his beloved Adina by inadvertently Playing Hard to Get, and Dulcamara is quick to declare it the "elixir"'s work. He leaves the village in triumph, as customers chase after him and beg for a bottle of the "elixir", while the villagers praise him and ask him to come back soon.
