YMMV / LA By Night

Go To

  • And You Thought It Would Fail: V5 has proven very controversial with both its game mechanics as well as lore changes. LA by Night has since proven extremely popular with new as well as old vampire fans.
  • Anticlimax Boss:
    • Bobby Blaine. After being built up for several sessions as a rival to Victor and a man working with Hunters, he is ambushed at the Succubus Club and killed without fanfare. The closing narration says that the Hunters are scattered and whatever Thin-Bloods he had in his service doomed, meaning he proved nothing more than a minor inconvenience.
    • The second battle against Rodrigo has the team ambushing his wounded form and sending him to the Final Death with little resistance.
    • Vannevar and Suzanne flee into the night with the Second Inquisition chasing them.
    • Aurora and the vamily never fight; she ends up killed by the Second Inquisition when Katya distracts her until they're both slain.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Annabelle is generally well-liked for Erika Ishii's strong performance and general affability. However, some fans think she's a little too much of a Friendly Neighborhood Vampire and overly naive as well as judgemental. Many are waiting for the time she has to take her first life as a Kindred or frenzies.
    • X has always been a character that divides the fans due to the fact that he is a "wacky" Malkavian that zig-zags between being a Sad Clown and hinting at a much darker persona. It also didn't help he was introduced as a substitute for the more-popular Jasper Heartwood before becoming a full-time cast member.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Chaz for being a Love to Hate smarmy bastard.
    • X for being a Cloud Cuckoolander Comic Relief "Fishmalk" that people actually liked. Well, most people.
    • Eva gradually became this to the point of becoming a Sixth Ranger main cast member.
    • Kasey and Sycorax of the Valkyries, due to being tough-as-nails female characters. Sadly, the Valkyries were all killed except for Kasey as an example of The Worf Effect.
    • Kyoko, to the point of joining the main cast in Season Four. This is due to being a Genki Girl Tremere and friend to Annabelle who gives a different energy than the rest of the vamily.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
  • Les Yay:
    • Invoked by the actresses deliberately with Annabelle, Nelli G, and Miranda in Episode 6.
    • Annabelle has a strong relationship with Ellenore explored in her epilogue.
    • Shows up again when Suzanne attempts to seduce Nelli G.
    • Fiona does this to Chloe when she makes her a ghoul.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Victoria Ash crosses it when she orders the mass murder of every human at the Succubus Club in order to protect the Masquerade. She was the one who allowed the coterie to kill Bobby Blaine in public and vampires to feed openly, so it was a massacre entirely made by her own decision. The fact Victor can cloud minds meant that it was also completely unnecessary. Most vampires in the game show some concern for mortal life, but Victoria doesn't at all.
    • Don Antonio crosses this when he kidnaps his own grand-niece for some nefarious ritual.
    • Marie Antoinette, of all people, crosses it when she has one of her maids dress up as her in order to have her murdered by the mob outside.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: X became this for a lot of his detractors when he made a Faceā€“Heel Turn and attempted to kill Annabelle. The act had been telegraphed for some time but still caught many fans off guard.
  • Replacement Scrappy: X has this effect on some viewers who much preferred Alex Ward's quiet, subdued performance as Jasper over the "wacky" antics of Xander Jeanneret's character.
  • Rooting for the Empire: The mouthpiece of the Second Inquisition is Adrian, an ex-bishop who believes that some vampires can be redeemed. He is noted as the only member of the Second Inquisition to believe this is possible, and in the end he is killed for it. From that perspective, it's not hard to see the Inquisition's point. Even the most virtuous of the vampiric player characters only see mortals as a means to an end, which they can feed on and manipulate without repercussion. It isn't exactly hard to root for those mortals deciding to fight back.
  • The Scrappy: Fiona isn't liked by any of the fandom, being The Load as well as an Obstructive Bureaucrat. This becomes even worse when she becomes Baron of the (North) Valley.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • Ramona, the Gangrel Signature Character from the Clan Novel series.
    • Victoria Ash shows up in Episode 8.
    • Vannevar Thomas from the 1st Edition of Vampire: The Masquerade had been absent from canon for decades.
    • Baron Therese and Nines Rodriguez show up in Season 2.
    • Marie Antoinette, Karsh, Lucita, and Zelios the Nosferatu Builder show up in Season 3.
  • The Woobie:
    • Annabelle becomes this when X unexpectedly tries to kill her and steal her soul via diablerie. It destroys her faith in her coterie and their goodness.
    • Eva becomes this once the full extent of her abuse by Strauss becomes clear.
    • Katya is also this due to how much she's clearly tortured by her semi-requited love from her childe and abuse by Strauss.
