- Germans Love David Hasselhoff: According to an interview with director Masaki Kobayashi on the film's Criterion Blu-ray release, the film actually performed better in America than Japan, which he attributed to hippies and the new age movement.
- Spiritual Successor: The Lover's Vow segment of Tales from the Darkside: The Movie is this to the segment The Woman of the Snow as both are adaptations of the same story.
- Visual Effects of Awesome: The movie, almost sixty years later, still looks amazing. Being one of the first Japanese movies in color leads to a kaleidoscope of vivid landscapes and breathtaking shots, but the real star is the combination of practical effects, most of the Kwaidan was filmed on a large company owned stage, and as a result uses hand-painted backgrounds◊, and elaborate and detailed sets◊. When you throw all this with it's lush costume designs, expert cinematography, and stellar atmosphere, it's a visual treat.
