YMMV / Kurt Cobain

Go To

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Many of his songs with Nirvana have become uncomfortable since his death, particularly "Come As You Are", which has the line "And I swear that I don't have a gun / No, I don't have a gun..." Not to mention the fact that In Utero was originally planned to be titled I Hate Myself And I Want To Die.
    • There are several publicity shots of Cobain holding a gun in his mouth.
  • Hype Backlash: He's so often described as one of the most important musicians of the last twenty years that this reaction often comes about.
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: Interesting example - Kurt loved Nevermind, until its more mainstream feel won him fans whom he felt didn't understand his message, along with a serious disconnect between the tracks that he loved (namely "Drain You", which was one of his favorites) and the tracks that blew up ("Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Lithium", the former of which he decried as a Pixies ripoff).
  • Nausea Fuel: Cobain had a fascination with human anatomy. Many of his lyrics and album artwork feature disturbing Body Horror imagery of this kind.
  • Pop-Cultural Osmosis: The first thing most people think about when they hear the name Kurt Cobain is not his music per sé, but the fact that his name is so linked to suicide.
