YMMV / Kulipari: An Army of Frogs

Go To

  • Adorkable: Darel is very committed to his training, which makes him seen as a dork in the eyes of the other villagers. He is however very likable.
  • Adaptation Displacement: It's based on a series of books that almost no one knows about.
  • Complete Monster:
    • Lord Marmoo, the brutal Evil Overlord of the scorpions, believes that the weak have no right to survive. Longing to destroy the fertile Amphibilands, Marmoo teams up with the Spider Queen Jarrah and leads the armies into battle, killing the Turtle King Sergu. Upon his initial defeat, Jarrah makes Marmoo stronger than before, whereupon he repays her by murdering her. Drunk on his newfound might, Marmoo attacks another village to raze it to the ground and kills the chief of the frogs himself. Returning to the spiders, Marmoo kills many of them by collapsing their fortress, not even caring his own men and brother Pigo are within. Forcing the surviving spiders into service, Marmoo attacks the Amphibilands, killing many frogs and even sneering that the only scorpions to die are those too weak to survive. Upon his victory, Marmoo banishes the frogs into the desert with no supplies, condemning them to slow death by heat and starvation. Not even his men are immune to his cruelty, as any scorpion injured in the fight, including Pigo, is given the choice of leaving or being eaten alive. Ambitious, brutal, cruel and egotistical a monster as they come, Marmoo believes only in power, domination and revenge with nothing to stand in his way.
    • Dream Walker: Lord Darkan, the ruler of Cardigal, is a vicious lizard who relishes in dominating those in and around his city. With an army of lizards and spiders at his command, Darkan and his forces seek out strong warriors around the world, kidnapping and imprisoning them before forcing them to fight in the Kingdom of Fighters tournaments. Those who refuse to fight are either killed or cajoled into fighting after Darkan threatens to murder their families. When Darkan learns that Koa is a Dream Walker with extraordinary power, he and his army storm Koa's village and force his father to deliver Koa into his custody. After Koa initially refuses to join the Kingdom of Fighters tournament and threatens to kill Darkan, Darkan convinces him to fight by smugly telling Koa that should anything happen to him, his soldiers will slaughter all of the prisoners in Cardigal as well as Koa's entire village.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Killara is slowly starting to gain many fans, largely due to his unique design, his voice work by Phil LaMarr, for leading a diverse Badass Army, and for being a Punch-Clock Villain as opposed to someone who has a personal vendetta against the residents of the Amphibilands. Not to mention that he betrayed Marmoo at just the right moment and helped Darel defeat him.
  • Moral Event Horizon: In the final episode, Marmoo banishes the frogs he doesn't kill to the desert, destroying all their food and medicine to ensure they can't survive.
  • Popular with Furries: Due to being one of the few series about Funny Animal frogs (or frogs, period), it has its niche.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap:
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: While the first half of Season 1 isn't necessarily bad, it does start out cliché and focuses either on world building instead of the plot, or Darel's mission to rescue Gee from the scorpions, which takes three episodes before it's resolved. None of the Kulipari even show up. The show picks up by Episode 7 when the Kulipari are finally introduced and Marmoo's army reaches the Amphibilands. The last handful of episodes drastically contrast the beginning handful of episodes in terms of tone and pacing.
  • Tear Jerker: At the end Dream Walker, Tipi gives Stinger a tearful plea for him to stay when he decides to leave to become the new scorpion lord, and when she does say goodbye she comes very close to Inelegant Blubbering as she all but tells Stinger that she loves him as he walks off to join the scorpion army. She meets Jir on the way back, and cries into his shoulder, saying how Stinger was "her favorite", before Jir says the same.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: This show is a Netflix exclusive title with a TV-Y7-FV rating, yet there are a lot of depictions of violence, war, and death as a lot of the recurring characters were killed in the first season, not to mention the lack of clothing that the male frogs had.
