• Harsher in Hindsight:
  • Kara tries to convince Kal that they are not from Krypton. Ten years later she was killed and replaced with a non-Kryptonian Supergirl.
  • Kara gets incredibly mad and slaps Superman when he refuses to help her save the Xonn. Her outburst becomes more understandable when you consider these lines of Red Daughter of Krypton:
    Supergirl: How could anyone make it their mission in life to murder whole worlds? Can you imagine what an abomination that is to an orphan from a dead planet?
• It Was His Sled: If you have read any Superman comic written after 1976, it's pretty obvious Linda was lying about Krypton's nonexistence.
• Squick: This scene◊ wherein Superman is walking out of the shower half-naked as a woman is waiting for him, her long legs being highlighted as her face remains tantalizingly darkened...and she happens to be Supergirl. Surely Gerry Conway wasn't meaning to imply cousin incest, but even her "I hope you don't mind me waiting for you" line sounds suggestive.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: The story expects readers to regard Superman as misguided but right when he starts demolishing a chemical plant and tossing oil tankers into space. It does not work because his actions were bound to cause several environmental disasters in a single day. Still nobody ever points out the inevitable consequences of tearing down a chemical factory where hazardous materials are treated, whereas Superman does not even think of containing the hazardous waste being spilled out.
