YMMV / Kraven's Last Hunt

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: Kraven himself. Some readers (and writers) find him very sympathetic on the basis of his suicide. Some have a hard time taking him seriously. Some consider him an unrepentant monster whose death was chilling but necessary.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Kraven's repetition of "I am the Spider" is reminiscent of a much-derided dark period Peter Parker went through shortly before and right at the start of The Clone Saga, when he kept saying things like "Peter Parker is dead. I am the Spider."
  • Memetic Mutation: #ripbozo Explanation
  • Older Than They Think: Superior Spider-Man (2013) wasn't the first to have one of Peter's foes try to pull a Superior Successor on Peter, as this was published first. There's even a Hilarious in Hindsight line where Kraven brags about being superior to Spider-Man.
  • Once Original, Now Common: As Tom Defalco said, KLH is the first adult story told in Spider-Man's pages, being not only darker by Spider-Man standards but also quite dark in general. It was also the first event title in Spider-Man continuity, being a serial story that ran across multiple titles. The reason for doing so, as editor Jim Salicrup pointed out, was creative rather than commercial. The twist of Kraven shooting and killing Spider-Man would have been spoiled if Peter were to show up in a satellite title that, as was common, didn't allude to happenings in the main book. Later event titles, both in Spider-Man and elsewhere, weren't written with such considerations in mind.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Before this story, Kraven the Hunter was seen as a joke villain owing to his ridiculous costume and shallow motivation. This story instantly elevated his standing in the fanbase, adding some much needed psychological complexity to the character that helped to better define him as a Foil for Peter Parker.
  • Sacred Cow: One of the most beloved stories in Spider-Man's decades-long publication history.
  • Signature Scene: Peter crawling out of his grave pushing out the coffin, the mud, and then sitting before the gravestone "Here lies Spider-Man", which is also the cover of Issue #4, is one of the most famous images in Spider-Man lore.
