YMMV / Koala Man

Go To

  • Adorkable:
    • Kevin's a loony, but his unwavering commitment to justice and order combined with his utter lack of malice makes him very likable. His son Liam even moreso.
    • Liam is as nerdy as he is a bubbly and innocent.
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Kevin's obsession with making everyone abide by the rules, his inability to read people and his melodramatic way of enforcing his will hint that he may have undiagnosed autism.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees:
    • The "Emu Wars" are actually real, though it was mainly dubbed as such by the press. In reality it was a series of failed wildlife control operation in which a squad from the Australian army was sent to deal with an emu infestation destroying crops in the Wheatbelt. The bumbling soldiers wasted several thousand rounds of machinegun ammo for comparatively little gain, and the incident became something of a national joke.
    • Yes, Dapto actually exists. Needless to say, it's very different to the Koala Man portrayal.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In "The Red Hot Rule", after Saucy Simmons Jr., a living sausage roll, dies in place of the Queen of Australia by being crushed and grilled to death on Chad Wagon's car, the Queen declares Saucy Jr. the new winner of the Miss Sausage Roll Pageant because she "saved" her life, when in reality Alison pushes her in front of the Queen to take her place. She takes Alison's crown and places it on Saucy Jr.'s grilled corpse. When Saucy Jr.'s funeral is televised, Kevin reveals her casket is empty and they fed her body to needy families.
  • Evil Is Cool: The Kookaburra is an entertainingly devious Manipulative Bastard and a legitimately intimidating presence.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Fans of Smiling Friends happily tuned in simply just because it's co-creator Michael Cusack's next cartoon series, there's also another camp who are checking the show out for Hugh Jackman's role as Big Greg.
  • Moe: Liam, Kevin and Vicky's son who has Youthful Freckles and is fairly friendly and innocent compared to his more sinister twin sister, Alison.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Saucy Jr getting grilled to death. The fact that she's an anthropomorphic sausage roll doesn't dull the horror one bit.
  • Squick: The Kookaburra saves Dapto from a bushfire by unleashing 30 years worth of pent-up urine.
  • Tear Jerker: Koala Man's origin story is quite heartbreaking. Some time ago Kevin rescued a koala joey and nursed it back to health, with Vicky making his signature koala mask to emulate the joey's mother. When the Koala was big enough to be released back into the wild, she was hit by a car, spurring Kevin to become Koala Man.
    • Knowing that Vicky made the Koala Man mask adds some real sadness to the scene where the Kookaburra yanks it off Koala Man's head and throws it into the ocean after trapping him on a desert island. Not only does Kevin wearing it show just how much he truly appreciates his wife (in spite of himself), but he wore it as a tribute to the koala he'd grown attached to.
  • The Woobie: Liam has to deal with inattentive parents, a selfish sister, the girl of his dreams being eaten and his latent psychic powers causing him stress. This kid could use a friend.
