YMMV / Kingdom's Disdain

Go To

  • Creepy Awesome: Mad Crossbones and Zaiveeur.
  • Designated Villain: In-universe: the Goblins are presented as a cruel people who the Samaar were justified in "defending themselves" against, but to some it comes across like an indigenous group fighting off colonizers. Though Cardinal is primarily getting his information from said Samaar people, the writer subtly makes it clear that the Goblins (while having some problematic cultural mores, like every culture) didn't deserve that.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: Worm and Sareash being attracted to each other is all but outright stated to be canon, but Worm and Cardinal's rivalry also has some moments that come off as very flirtatious.
  • Funny Moments:
    • In "House of Flies", Cardinal describes the name of his favorite resturaunt in Aldroy as "Squiggle Squiggle Picture of a Horse".
    • In the same book, he makes increasingly absurd guesses (Dwarf? Hobbit? Leprechaun?) at what fantasy race different shopkeepers might be.
    • A lot of Mad's The Comically Serious moments can be this.
    • Drunk!Cardinal in Blood Drain.
    • In The Nature of the Beast, Sareash gets everyone's attention by slicing a table in half with Valsrofen. She was apparently able to do that because she "always hated that table".
  • Ho Yay:
    • Cardinal is in awe of Mad's beauty when he first meets him.
    • Hilariously enough, Zaiveeur and Cardinal's conversation could be read like this.
  • Love to Hate: Worm is our first villain who isn't a mindless monster, Affably Evil, or a Well-Intentioned Extremist; but just a nasty piece of work. For some, this is actually a breath of fresh air.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Trog herself believes she crossed it when she murdered her loving husband and his possible lover in a jealous rage. It's left to the reader to decide if she's right or not.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • A lot of the monsters, but special mention goes to the Mother Leeches. They sedate animals, including humans, with their toxins, leaving them in a state of motionless euphoria, and lay their eggs inside their bodies. As parasites, they keep the animal alive as long as possible, but barely.
    • The Decay Beam.
    • The Beast of the Gulch spans miles with its tendrils, can grab and bash warriors and grown horses against rocks in a couple of moves, and its center resembles flesh and maggots.
  • Tear Jerker: Thermavorous's death, mentioned above. He was Sareash's mentor and the one who trained her on the sword... and she ends up killing him on accident.
