  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: As detailed on the main page, Hank punishing Bobby by forcing him to smoke a whole carton of cigarettes used to be a wildly accepted punishment called a Radish Cure; the idea was that a child would smoke so many cigarettes at once that they'd get sick enough to not want to smoke anymore. Such a punishment would be common during Hank's childhood.
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: At least for the first half of the episode. Hank and Peggy do seem a lot more relaxed than they usually are once they resume smoking and as Bobby notes, Hank does look cool when he flips a cigarette into his lips. Once they're put in the smoking section of Smokey's, full of dark smoke and wheezing, sickly-looking old people, however, it immediately stops being cool.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In The Stinger, Boomhauer mentions if you smoke, you'll end up like Morton Downey Jr.. At the time, Downey was a vocal anti-smoking advocate by that point and had already had one of his lungs removed when he was diagnosed with lung cancer, which ended up claiming his life in 2001.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In the same stinger, Boomhauer mentions you'll end up like Robert Downey Jr., who at the time of this episode’s release in 1997, was in the headlines for his drug addictions and arrests. Over a decade later, he would have a massive Career Resurrection to the point that more people know him as Tony Stark/Iron Man than for any of his scandals.
  • Squick: This exchange when Hank and Peggy go to Smokey's.
Peggy: Where is Old Smokey? We would love to say "hi."
Hostess: Oh. Smokey's no longer with us.
    Peggy: Oh, I'm so sorry.
Hostess: Well, it's for the best, darlin'. Those last few years when it spread to his bones.
  • Values Resonance: Hank is depicted as being in the wrong for using the Radish Cure on Bobby, to the point where a support group kicks him out when he confesses to doing so. He would still be treated as such today.
