YMMV / Kafka on the Shore

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Nakata encounters Johnnie Walker, who may be his absentee father. A man who knows the magic of sapient cats, Walker agonizingly murders them, cutting them open to extract their souls which he stitches together to make a magic flute. Intending on using this flute to kill humans to make an even bigger flute, Johnnie Walker doesn't intend to stop until he has perhaps wiped out all that lives, using his planned death to hitch a ride in Nakata's body so he can reach the magic "Entrance Stone" to perhaps threaten all the world.
  • Fridge Logic: Borders on WMG due to the nature of the book, but on a second reading once can infer the following; Kafka's dad? Johnnie Walker. Whether he was born/created as Johnnie and hid it well, or Johnnie took over his body recently is anyone’s guess.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Very popular in Vietnam, to the point that in conversation "Kafka-esque" is more likely to be referring to this book and not Franz Kafka.
  • The Woobie: Nakata and Miss Saeki are the two most obvious examples, but Kafka has moments too.
