• Nightmare Fuel: The movie pulls absolutely no punches in showing what hundreds or thousands of rads do to a human body. The ones going into the reactor room die agonizing deaths over days. Many more succumb to cancer and other radiation-related illnesses over the following months and years.
  • Also, a sailor's hand gets badly mangled in a hoisting chain of a torpedo (during one of Vostrikov's needlessly arduous drill scenarios), while his comrade splits his head open.
  • The poor mouse, basically serving as a Canary in a Coal Mine, succumbs first to the radiation. What's worse is that as events had played out, the presence of the mouse was wholly unnecessary, as nobody would need it to identify the blatantly obvious risk of the radiation leaks after the reactor was compromised.
