• Continuity Lock-Out:
  • While the broad strokes of Suprman's conflicts with Darkseid and Brainiac from his series are acknowledged, obviously people who had missed STAS will be missing the full context. Cartoon Network was actually savvy about this and intentionally re-aired "Apokolips... Now!" and "Legacy" as part of the lead-in to the Season premiere during its original airing.
  • The DVD Commentary also reveals George Newbern got hit with this during the recording sessions. As he had replaced Tim Daly as Superman's VO, Newbern understandably wasn't familiar with the long, ugly history between the DCAU Darkseid and Superman. So Timm and company had to give him a primer on what had happened during STAS to ensure Newbern could have the necessary context for Superman's rage and emotional state in this duology.
• Growing the Beard: While individual episodes of the first season could be pretty good, many of them felt rushed and lacking in energy. The production team themselves took a long look at what they had done and decided to really push the envelope across the board. They expressly put out a list of things they wanted to fix: Superman was no longer a punching bag, the action has to feel like it hurts, the characters have to show emotion and the environments have to be bigger and crazier. Their attitude was basically "good enough wasn't good enough anymore." This is highlighted with this episode, as Superman is able to fight off Braniac's energy beam, fight Darkseid to a draw, there is real emotion between Batman and Superman and Brainiac's mothership is suitably weird.
• Tough Act to Follow: The DCAU Superman and Darkseid's long-awaited rematch. As Bruce Timm's acknowledged, trying to top their fight from "Legacy" — especially Supes for all intents blowing up Darkseid's head — was never going to be easy. Timm also had the additional challenge of having to top himself, as he had story-boarded the "Legacy" fight and pulled rank to storyboard the rematch.
