  • Audience-Alienating Premise: The film is an Americanized 2001 time-travel comedy based off the French film Les Visiteurs. John Hughes thought he could make it work, but the American side didn't care as it was based off a film almost no one knew about in the US, while the French were alienated by the fact that it wasn't the much needed sequel to solve the cliffhanger of the second film from 1998 and the many changes between this film and the original. It was a Box Office Bomb all the way around and got an Un-Reboot in 2016, Les Visiteurs: Bastille Day, which ignored this film.
  • Genius Bonus: The drunks Thibault briefly befriends mockingly call him "Lancelot" after hearing his claims that he's a medieval knight. It's rather fitting they call him that, specifically, since Lancelot was actually the creation of a French poet (ChrĂ©tien de Troyes) who was bluntly added into the Arthurian Legend, a distinctly British mythos.
  • Questionable Casting: Jean Reno had a good enough English and experience with Hollywood by that point (Mission: Impossible, Ronin, Godzilla). Christian Clavier had neither.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The general reactions in France when this remake was made. The fact that the two protagonists don't look like they come from The Dung Ages was heavily criticized (they don't have rotten teeth, for instance, not do they behave bawdy), as this trope was a huge part of the memorable humor in the original film.
  • Tear Jerker: While brief, the moment of Princess Rosalind's death is very heartbreaking to see. The fact that she was killed by Thibault, her own fiancĂ© during the wedding banquet doesn't help.
