• Alternate Character Interpretation: The movie leaves it a bit vague whether Chapman agreeing that Johnnie Dee should be released is a Heel–Face Turn or a Know When to Fold 'Em moment, with there being scenes and factors which could support both.
• Ensemble Dark Horse:
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran Herbert Richardson puts on a pretty powerful performance as the most doomed and torn up of the death row inmates.
  • Ralph Myers is a surprisingly compelling and multi-dimensional character who gets a Big Damn Heroes moment.
• The Woobie: Just about every death row inmate in the movie is presented as going through a mentally agonizing time and subjected to unfair treatment by the system, regardless of guilt or innocence.
