YMMV / Junjou Romantica

Go To

  • Angel/Devil Shipping: The Romantica pair, with Usagi being the 'devil' since he is very perverted and possesive towards Misaki, and Misaki being the 'angel'.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Misaki. Some fans wonder if he is truly in love with Akihiko, whether he has been accepting the fact that he's in love with him and the reasons for his denial and oblivious attitude about his feelings.
    • No one really knows what Tsumori wants with either Hiroki and/or Nowaki.
  • Better on DVD: No more shadows!
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: Miyagi, straight up until that point, suddenly grabbing a heartbroken Hiroki and trying to kiss him before Nowaki stepped in. Never showed any interest in him before, and it's never mentioned again afterwards.
    • Miyagi is normally pretty grabby and in other ways overly familiar with Hiroki, though. He just likes to tease his kohai.
    • In a bit of Fridge Brilliance, Miyagi's wife left him only a month ago and seeing Hiroki's state, thinking he was just dumped, could be considered him trying to find solace with a fellow broken heart.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Half of the fandom are not fond with Misaki, due to his Tsundere streak to Usagi, his obliviousness when it comes to love and his feelings and he also prone to get into troubles in almost every chapter. While the other half of the fandom loves him due to his kind-hearted and selfless personality.
    • The Terrorist pair also shaping to this, as one of the reason is the huge age gap of Miyagi and Shinobu.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Nowaki, the most innocent, adorkable Seme ever.
    • Shinnosuke Todo. He's likable for his supportive and kind personality, his Adorkable nature, and being one of the very few characters who is not attracted to Misaki in any way.
  • Fan Nickname: Pedojuuin for Ijuuin.
  • Memetic Molester:
  • Memetic Mutation:
  • Moe: Misaki, Misaki's nephew Mahiro, Nowaki, and Shinobu in certain moments.
  • The Scrappy: Fans are not fond with the existence of Mizuki, even for a second.
  • Values Dissonance: A complicated one involving Fuyuhiko, Haruhiko and his mother, and the Usami family. While not uncommon in the West for there to be illegitimate children, having or being one can still carry a degree of stigma. In Japan however, it could destroy a family's whole social standing and being a bastard was considered incredibly shameful. Natsuko's intense hatred of her husband may have originated largely from Fuyuhiko having an extramarital affair that resulted in his lover's child. Not only did Fuyuhiko favor Haruhiko and even adopt him into her family after his lover's death, if it were ever exposed the Usami Group was inherited by a non-blood relative, it could easily bring devastation to their entire company. However, it speaks volumes to how much Fuyuhiko loved Haruhiko and his mother. Fuyuhiko continued caring for them, trying to help Haruhiko's mother with the many hardships of being a single mother and his attempt to guarantee Haruhiko a stable position and acknowledgement as his successor. Status of being an illegitimate child would most likely end any living Haruhiko made for himself and if any familial conflicts broke out legally between Akihiko and Haruhiko being half-siblings, Haruhiko would still be considered the elder brother as he was officially adopted. Fridge Brilliance to why Fuyuhiko tried to arrange the engagement to Kaoruko, so Haruhiko would marry into the family too.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Misaki. Poor clueless viewers who thought this series was just an average romance one, especially the homophobes.
  • The Woobie: Misaki. It's hard not to feel bad for him after finding out about his past. He once again become this while dealing with the other members of the Usami family.
