YMMV / Jules Verne's Mystery on Monster Island

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: It's commonly assumed the film is an In Name Only adaptation of The Mysterious Island, but in reality, it's based on one of Jules Verne's more obscure works, Godfrey Morgan.
  • Ass Pull: The Reveal that all the monsters on the island are fake and the entire adventure was staged by Kolderup for Godfrey. It has absolutely no bearing on the plot and contradicts a few of the film's previous events.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Peter Cushing and Terence Stamp's characters are considered two of the few redeeming aspects of the film.
  • The Scrappy: Brandon's Cult Movie Reviews refers to Professor Artelett as "The Jar Jar Binks", and with good reasons. He's whiney, Screams Like a Little Girl, does little more than provide unfunny comic relief, and generally comes off as a poor attempt to ape the eccentric British professor characters of much better adventure movies.
    • Ethnic Scrappy: The Chinaman is so stereotypical that it's not even funny.
  • So Bad, It's Good: To some people. The movie's plot, characters, humour, and special effects are so asinine that it somehow comes around and becomes entertaining.
  • Special Effect Failure: The monsters are incredibly fake-looking. Given the twist, it seems even the producers felt they were too unconvincing to be real.
  • Uncertain Audience: The way the posters for the film advertise it combined with Juan Piquer Simón's resume (including cult horror exploitation films like Pieces and Slugs) would lead one to believe it is a mature, serious adventure flick, but the movie is also full of childish humor, characters, and plot points that make it feel more like a kids movie instead. As a result, it's hard to tell whether this movie was made for kids or adults in mind. It certainly doesn't help that one of Simón's also did Pod People, a horror film that was hastily rehashed into a kids movie as a result of Executive Meddling.
