YMMV / Joe's Apartment

Go To

  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • The German release added an extra subtitle for the movie, Das große Krabbeln. Guess what it loosely translates to? A Bug's Life.
    • A young woman named Lily is most concerned with getting a beautiful garden underway. Ring any bells?
  • Retroactive Recognition: Desiree Cascado, who makes a small cameo in the film, is best known as Gabi from Sesame Street. A weird example as she took on the role just a few years before Joe's Apartment was released.
    • Director John Payson went on to direct a video for The Residents.
  • Squick: This is not a movie for the insectophobic.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Many critics felt that the idea of "cockroaches having a society" was the most interesting part of the movie and thought that it went unexplored in favor of the human characters. One of the "Roach TV" scenes shows that rats and pigeons can also talk, and that all three species hate each other and view them as rivals. The climax implies that they put together a truce to save Joe and build the park, but we never see how they got the pigeons and rats on their side...or indeed, what the pigeons and rats did to save him or build the park.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: For a low-budget movie, this is a film that has some incredible effects (a mix of stop-motion and CGI, supervised by Chris Wedge of Ice Age fame and executed by Blue Sky Studios, Wedge's company).
