YMMV / Jewelpet: Magical Change

Go To

  • Bizarro Episode: Episode 18-B is about some seal matrices (animated by Ruby) being angsty that they're not useful anymore. This is the entire focus of the episode, it's played inordinately seriously, and it's never mentioned again. As a result, many fans feel that it's the worst episode of the season.
  • Broken Base:
    • The show sparked a debate among fans, with some praising it for reverting to a gag show and others arguing that it lacked a focused plot which detracted from its enjoyment.
    • The Jewelpets' human designs have gotten this. Some fans think they're appropriately cute, others think they're ugly and gaudy. The only human form everyone seems to unanimously like is Luea's.
    • Garnet and Sapphie being absent from the main cast. Those who like it argue that it's about time some other Jewelpets got the spotlight and that it feels fresh, those who dislike think that Garnet and Sapphie have become so integral to the main cast that it's not truly Jewelpet without them. The fact that fan-favorite Larimar is a main character alongside the underrated Luna also contributed to history vindicating Magical Change.
  • Cult Classic: Due to its ridiculous amount of gags and its gijinka concept, it did gain a decent amount of fans.
  • It Was His Sled: Luea becomes Jewel Land's queen.
  • Sequelitis: Some fans think of this as worse than Kira Deco and Happiness combined and it was often thought of as the worst season period until it got Vindicated by History.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!:
    • Just when the series gets a good reputation with the very dark and dramatic Lady Jewelpet, Magical Change's rather confusing plot and over-reliance on gags pissed off a lot of fans.
    • The fact that Garnet and Sapphie aren't part of the main pet cast provoked this reaction from many fans.
    • Many people don't feel misono's voice is right for Luna, feeling that Rumi Shishido had a more fitting voice and did the best job with the character.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • If you think that Jewelpets turning into humans opens up new directions in the way they interact with the world and character development, you'll be disappointed. The human forms are only used to power up their magic, and only rarely does anyone stay transformed for more than a handful of seconds.
    • Only about five episodes are dedicated to solving the supposed Myth Arc; the remaining 34 have nothing to do with the premise of "Jewelpets travel to the human world to understand humanity and to do something about that castle" (not even "dark magic" is ever really explained), they're largely set in Airi's house and are about the antics surrounding whatever inane thing some Jewelpet has developed an obsession for.
  • Vindicated by History: Nowadays, you wouldn't think this season brought the Jewelpet franchise to an indefinite hiatus, but Magical Change was eventually seen in a better light for multiple reasons:
    • The previous season, Lady Jewelpet, introduced fan-favorites Luea and Larimar but heavily shafted the pets in favor of humans. This time, both Luea and Larimar are main characters, Magical Change is pet-focused, and they are far more badass and have far more action.
    • Luna, who is often considered underrated, is a main character for once.
    • Dian had a human form back in the first season. Nowadays, fans have warmed up more to the other pets' visually distinctive and appropriately cute human forms, especially Luea's already universally loved one, and admitted that Magical Change got more hate than it deserved. There's even fan demand to bring back the human forms in later seasons.
