• Cult Classic: This film has steadily gained an underground following in serious film circles over the decades, for its unusual concept and feminist themes. The 2009 DVD release as part of The Criterion Collection helped it jump onto the mainstream film appreciation radar (it's even been screened on Turner Classic Movies), along with renewed attention for Chantal Akerman's directorial career. Akerman's 2015 suicide has also been a factor in the film's emergence. Still, it's not exactly a household name as a film, and its top-ranked position on the Sight & Sound poll in 2022 (having ranked 35th in the 2012 poll) was a shock to many film fans who hadn't even heard of it up until that point.
