• Angst? What Angst?: After their first moment of unhappiness about the other Glacidae on the Pufferfish being eaten, Grom does not seem to care much, seeming more invested in their games, feeling superior to humans, and other trivial matters.
• Nausea Fuel: Some of the descriptions of the kinds of mess that the janitor heroes have had to tackle are pretty gross.
  • Cured humans aren't supposed to eat aside from through their stomach ports, but they're given gum that's flavored according to old human foods. These are never flavors the readers would want in gum. Mops often notes the smell of the gum Monroe's chewing and they include salad and pepperoni pizza.
• Reality Subtext: Terminal Peace was delayed and features a tonal shift, becoming somewhat more serious. Additionally, the book starts with Mops being diagnosed with reversion - her body is rejecting the cure, giving her anywhere between two weeks and two months before her personhood dies. This hangs over her in a sober way, making her second-guess herself and affecting her relationships with the other characters, including frustration when some friends tiptoe around it. During the delay between books Jim Hines' wife contracted cancer and died - in the endnotes, he talks about how this affected the story.
