YMMV / James & Mike Mondays

Go To

  • Archive Panic: There are almost 400 episodes, and many of them are 20-30 minutes in length, so it will take you a while.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Mike mentioned in one episode that fans request a podcast; he turned the request down by saying this series is essentially a podcast, since it's James and Mike talking about various topics anyway. In 2021, Cinemassacre would actually make a weekly podcast for real, though Mike had left Cinemassacre by that point.
    • At the start of the Super Metroid Part 2 video after being killed by Phantoon, James says he wants a reboot called The Karate Adult. In 2018, Cobra Kai debuted, where Daniel is an adult.
    • When playing Aladdin (Virgin Games), Mike says they should get Gilbert Gottfried on AVGN. Sure enough, only a few years later, Gilbert guest starred as Fred Fuchs in the Life of Black Tiger episode.
  • Memetic Mutation: A couple spawned from this series:
    • "No Time" Explanation
    • 5:40 Explanation
    • James bored face Explanation
    • "Yes, certainly." Explanation
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The "Sonic the Hedgehog Rom Hack" episode opens with what appears to be a pleasant game of the first Sonic game...only for the screen to be filled with static and change the backdrop to a hellish landscape, replacing Sonic with Sonic.exe. It gets worse from there...
    I AM GOD
    • While playing Layers of Fear, James recounts a nightmare he had where he found a pair of X-ray goggles and used them to peer through the walls of his house. He found a dead, rotting corpse.
    • The (acted by miniature) car accident at the end of "Wii Car Adapter and Travel Pack" can be this for some.
  • Padding: Averted; an occasional request Mike gets asked is, (paraphrased) "Why can't you show us the whole unedited video of you guys playing games?" Mike responded that he edits them down to just the highlights for two reasons: One, the two aren't constantly doing or saying funny things, so there would be a lot of dead air if he did that, and two, it would make the videos incredibly long. He compromised by doing live streams, which feature much longer videos of him playing through various games, including a few that have been featured on James & Mike Mondays.
  • Seasonal Rot: The first half of the 2019 season had more instances of the duo revisiting a game they already played on the show or AVGN, only with a twist (Super Mario Bros.: Backwards Challenge, No Coins No Enemies Challenge; Silver Surfer No Shots Fired; Double Dragon 2 Playing Against Each Other; Ghosts n' Goblins Torch Only; Doom Cyberdemon: Fists Only; NES with Boxing Gloves (playing Ninja Gaiden and Punch-Out); Super C: No Shots Fired. Also the 2020 season, due to half of it being shot remotely, which reduced the comedic chemistry when they're not in the same room.
    • It can also be argued that towards the end, the "authentic" feel that the show originally prided itself on was reduced in favor of the convenience of the Everdrive, which was featured in some episodes.
