YMMV / JCVD

  • Award Snub: Richard Corliss of Time magazine, who rated Van Damme's performance as the second best of the year right after Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, stated that Jean-Claude Van Damme "deserves not a black belt, but an Oscar".
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • A strange moment sees the least likable robber speaking less and less coherently right after being shot in the forehead. While not completely impossible to happen according to some interesting cases in neurology's history, it looks just plain bizarre and adds nothing to the film's course.
    • Although it admittedly seems to be the whole point of the film, the very moving monologue involving JCVD taking a moment to speak to God, which may or may not have been in his head (though JCVD's chair rising up to the ceiling probably was), is still an inexplicable, out of nowhere instance.
  • He Really Can Act: Most of the critics who praised the movie found it pretty powerful that Jean-Claude Van Damme, of all people, could pull off Adam Westing Played for Drama. For fans of the genre, even if it was acknowledged a lot of Van Damme's acting here was fueled by him just channeling his own life experiences, a lot of people did change their opinion about his true talents after watching this film.
  • Moment of Awesome: Jean-Claude's monologue.
  • Tear Jerker: Again, Jean-Claude's monologue.
