YMMV / Inside Daisy Clover

Go To

  • Cult Classic: The film was considered a failure, initially getting mediocre reviews and grossing only about one third of its $4.5 million production budget, but it garnered a cult following and some critical reappraisal over the years, particularly after Natalie Wood's tragic death.
  • Fair for Its Day: At the time of the film's release, homosexuality was still a highly taboo subject in American society and, prior to The '60s, was one of the topics The Hays Code expressly prohibited. Robert Redford reportedly insisted that Wade, who's gay in the original novel, have some interest in women (hence the romancing of Daisy). Likewise the studio, fearful of the potential controversy, insisted that the film only acknowledge the character's bisexuality through a few bits of dialogue. Despite these limitations, the film is generally recognized for one of the early depictions of a gay or bisexual character in American cinema who is neither ashamed of his sexuality nor wants to commit suicide.
  • Funny Moments: Daisy's Bungled Suicide, turning the kitchen's gas on and then off each time someone rings at the door or on the phone. She ends up burning her hand on the burner, and decides it's just better to live and happily blows up the house with the gas and the burner.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Daisy trying to commit suicide only to be comedically prevented from doing so each time. Natalie Wood made a suicide attempt during the film's production.
  • Les Yay: When Melora Swan visits a bedridden Daisy, she advises Daisy to travel around the world and tells her she can accompany her. Then she blows her a kiss when leaving.
