• Jerks Are Worse Than Villains: The murderer in Series 2, Sam, in comparison to Bethany and particularly Karen. Sam is a truly horrible person, as a murderer who took advantage of a sixteen-year-old boy that his wife Sally taught and convinced himself they were in love. However, Karen and Bethany are noticeably more hated for their abrasive personalities and entitled behavior.
• The Scrappy: Karen and, to a lesser extent, Bethany in Series 2.
  • Bethany is a Bratty Teenage Daughter whose mental health problems are not depicted sympathetically. When she isn't viciously bullying other kids, she's trying to leverage her mother against them with her victim complex and trying to garner sympathy because she was bullied by Matty before his murder. However, she pales in comparison to her mother Karen.
  • Karen in particular is extremely nasty to everybody and is relentlessly clingy towards Sam, to the point of threatening Sally (who has been in prison for almost a decade) to stay away from them when she has hardly done anything. The amount of Never My Fault and Wangst she shows makes her very unpopular, as she seems determined to punish Sally as much as possible simply for being married to Sam first, to the point of trying to throw her authority around to make sure Sally doesn't work at school - not because of her murder conviction in reality, but because of the threat it poses to her and Sam's relationship.
