YMMV / Indie Pogo

Go To

  • Abridged Arena Array: Tournament Rules mode is made to accomodate this somewhat, since each player can "ban" stages for the next round, and no matter what Flappy Pipes, Block World, Runbow Volcano, Well Caverns, and Phantom King's Mansion cannot be picked in the mode.
  • Ascended Meme:
    • Frogtaro was made a paid skin after the heavy metal update.
    • Handsome Mr. Frog: In a way since he ended up being officially sprited by Trevor and put in the character pitch alongside characters like Quote from Cave Story and Isaac from The Binding of Isaac
    • Super Saiyan Stardrop: One of the game's creators, Trevor was a fierce competitor in the first ever Indie Pogo tourney with his own character he made himself: Stardrop. His performance was so well it led to people leaving the meme label on Stardrop. Within the following week a skin that matched the ultra instinct color palette was added onto him.
    • Waluigi Zorbie: A random joke that appeared out of nowhere and stuck around due to how absurd it was. A purple skin acknowledging the meme came in the same patch along with Instinct Stardrop.
  • Bonus Feature Failure:
    • To a degree, the Heavy Metal augment can be this. It disables the auto-jump mechanic, but it is an augment (meaning they have to be on in order to use it), and it can only be used with four characters at launch.
      • In one of the recent updates Heavy Metal was updated to be slower, losing a lot of appeal to many players.
    • The Augment system as a whole is currently implemented poorly and inconvenient to set up. They don't have much going for them to make augments worth setting up either.
  • Fridge Brilliance: Prior to the Heavy Metal Update, several of the tag teams you would fight in the second half of Arcade Mode actually make quite a lot of sense when analyzed.
    • Fishy and Orcane: Both are aquatic creatures with limbs that normally don't belong on them.
    • Penelope and Stardrop: Both are space travelers.
    • Viridian and Welltaro: Both have a simple art style and spend a lot of time off the ground.
    • CommanderVideo and Shovel Knight: They're two of the biggest names in indie history.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Cursed Walking Blockman: It's exactly how it sounds. This meme originated from a scrapped mechanic earlier on. Blockman had a very questionable part of the mechanic, leading to his walk cycle becoming a meme. It is now in the game as Blockman's walk cycle if he has the Heavy Metal augment on.
    • Frogtaro: Originated when an artist named Bedoop decided to randomly draw Welltaro in a frog hat, afterward she made an edit of Welltaro's sprite with the same hat. Frogtaro blew up in popularity and the devs got constantly requested for a Frogtaro skin (which eventually happened in the Heavy Metal update).
    • Handsome Mr. Frog: A character requested by a user from the discord: The Lunar 27, he owns the game and it led to the character being brought up many times. Both him and Trevor made sprites of the character in Indie Pogo's style. Eventually making it into a pitch toward Nicalis Inc.
    • Jack's Neutral Air from how broken and oppressive it used to be
    • Liliac's Cyclone
    • "Live by the axe or die by the axe"
    • Orcane Pogo: The joke became very widespread in the community after its April Fools video
    • Trevor is a semi-common joke suggestion for a playable fighter, even showing up in a joke April Fool's Day screenshot.
    • Zorbie in general from how wonky he is.
  • That One Level: Flappy Pipes is generally one of the harder stages to fight on due to it's very cramped space.
  • That One Sidequest: Several challenges stand out as harder than the rest, but are also somewhat worth it in that they unlock things.
    • Vampire Thriving. The concept is that you, as Penelope, start at 5 health, and have to use her Neutral Special to get up to 25 HP. Seems simple, but your opponent is Zorbie, a fighter with strong attacks, meaning one attack can undo a good chunk of progress really quickly. Oh, and Commander Video fights alongside him on Hard Mode. However, the reward is worth it, since it is the only challenge that gives you a skin instead of just coins.
    • Pogo Pantheon is somewhat doable in normal mode, but it becomes very difficult in Hard Mode. It is a Boss Rush where you have to fight the entire original cast of the game, one by one, with only three lives. Since it is a three against one, you can easily be ganged up on, especially if you picked a character with low damage output like Bullet Kin. Want to unlock Sovereign Deck without playing everyone's Classic Mode on hard? You gotta do this.
  • Unexpected Character: Very few people expected Diogenes to be a playable character, since he was revealed in the Pogo Direct with little foreshadowing.
