• Jerkass Woobie: Dixon is Jerkass with a Hair-Trigger Temper who doesn't hesitate to jump to violent solutions, but it's clear that he has trouble connecting with others, and faced the horrors of World War II, something that probably didn't have a very good effect on him, seeing that he hasn't had a successful film since before it began. By the end, he has driven away everybody.
• Vindicated by History: Similarly to other works by Nicholas Ray, the film was originally considered a box-office disappointment despite generally positive reviews, however, Ray's films had a revival in The '70s and Humphrey Bogart's antihero persona gained a following in the 60's, from those points the film began to earn more accolades and now is considered as one of the best films of all time as well as one of Bogart's finest performances.
