YMMV / Iggy Azalea

Go To

  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Or rather, Americans Love Iggy Azalea. She's more popular in the United States than in her native Australia. This is why she moved to the United States in the first place; she felt that Australia hated Rap, so she moved to America by herself when she was sixteen.
  • Hype Backlash: As "Fancy" stayed on the Billboard charts at #1, the ensuing media along with Iggy and her team tried to make her the current face of hip-hop. The song was very successful, but it was pointed out it was in due partly due to iHeartMedia making their stations play it at least 150 times. The hype backlash (along with several rappers and news outlets questioning her authenticity) pretty much guaranteed her spot as a polarizing rapper. There are also plenty of people who criticize her getting the lion's share of the accolades for the song, when Charli XCX is the one singing the catchiest part of the song and was just as involved in writing the song as Iggy was (if not more).
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Courtesy of "Fancy", most notably, "Who dat? Who dat? I-G-G-Y", "I'm so fansay", and "First things first, I'm the realest".
    • "I'm a black widow baby" from "Black Widow".
    • Igloo AustraliaExplanation
    • Her freestyle on Sway in the Morning quickly spawned a ton of snowclones.
    • People like to treat Azealia Banks and her as each others' Sitcom Arch-Nemesis because of their similar names.
    • That one incomprehensible freestyle she did on stage made the rounds on Vine and Twitter.note
    • Anyway, stream Sally Walker. Explanation
  • Narm: "First things first, I'm the realest" can come off as this, given that it's being said by a white Australian in a fake AAVEnote  accent.
  • Retroactive Recognition: At this point, "Fancy" is becoming largely remembered for bringing Charli XCX into the mainstream.
  • Signature Song: "Fancy" is the song people usually first think of when they hear her name, as it’s her only #1 hit and earned the #4 position on the 2014 Billboard Hot 100 Year-End charts.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Try hearing the opening notes of "Fancy" without being instantly reminded of The Knife's "Heartbeats" or Nu Shooz' "I Can't Wait".
  • Two-Hit Wonder: Despite having a massive following, "Fancy" and "Black Widow" are the only two hits the Australian rapper managed to garner in the United States as a lead artist, excluding her feature on Ariana Grande's massive hit "Problem". She has had a bit more success though in the UK where she has had 4 top 10 singles and another 3 made the top 20.
