  • Designated Love Interest: Teddy's relationship with Casey is far less interesting and plot-relevant than her relationships with Tina and Gen.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Secondary character Nikki has lots of fans for having some of the best skating scenes, an Embarrassing Nickname which she actually likes, and being amusingly immature but still fairly likable at times.
    • Gen, for being a Lovable Alpha Bitch who also has some good skating scenes, as well as Character Development.
    • Joan, for a good Parents as People, Education Mama arc.
    • Zoey only has four or five scenes, and only one affects the plot. Nonetheless, she is quite popular for her punk appearance, skating style, and Pet the Dog moment (telling Casey Tina sabotaged her skates).
  • Hollywood Homely: Casey is repeatedly shown as being a nerd who isn't supposed to be as beautiful as the glamorous ice-skaters. In truth, she's very pretty, and it's more her awkward nature that keeps her from appearing prettier than she actually is. Lampshaded by Gen when she just has Casey shake out her hair to make her look appropriate for a party.
  • Les Yay:
    • Could go either between Casey and Gen.
    • The ending suggests a possibility between Gen who sucks at math and Ann, Casey's friend the math geek.
  • Moe:
    • Casey's sheer passion for skating and habit of rambling on about mathematical equations in the middle of normal conversations make her surprisingly adorable.
    • Gen. Her first couple of scenes don't seem to be heading in this direction, but once she shows a warmer side of her personality, it's easy to feel warm and attached toward her as she starts acting like a Cool Big Sis to Casey and shows some range in chafing under the demands of her Stage Mom.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Gen's boyfriend Brian, who apparently adds a lot to her I Just Want to Be Normal feelings and has some nice Sickeningly Sweethearts vibe with her when their onscreen together, but only has a couple scenes and maybe half-a-dozen lines of dialogue with her.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Tina's backstory of injuring another skater so badly she couldn't compete anymore and Casey's mother's admission of having been an ice skater herself once upon a time seem like they're going collide for The Reveal that her mother was the skater who got injured, thus explaining her reluctance to let Casey skate, afraid she'll get hurt as well. But the film doesn't make the obvious connection and so the two plot threads are left as separate instances.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Casey's desire to give up going to an Ivy League school to focus on ice-skating can come off as this to some, especially considering most ice skaters are considered washed-up and ready to retire by the time they're the ripe old age of 30, whereas a physicist she would have career opportunities and ways to advance for her entire life. Her mother points out a lot of the downfalls of making professional ice-skating her career but just gets brushed off with talk of how this is Casey's dream and passion, despite only having skated professionally for a short period of time. The movie does end her still insisting to Tina that Casey should still go to college with Casey relucatantly agreeing.
