YMMV / I Think I Love My Wife

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The ending. It is outright bizarre that a non-musical film ends with a musical moment. It's almost like they didn't know how to end it and wanted a "go big or go home" moment, but it just ends up being a Mood Whiplash since Richard's previous scene is a serious and intelligent statement about being a responsible husband and father and living with the consequences of his actions. He may have been unhappy in a sexless marriage, but all his other needs were met, so he had to accept that and be a better husband and father. The ending doesn't quite undercut it, but it is noticeably odd.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The movie's ending where Brenda and Richard reconcile and their marriage looks strong is undercut by the truth that off-screen, Chris Rock cheated on his wife and they divorced. Although Rock concluded in his post-divorce Stand-Up Special Tambourine that cheating was a terrible mistake.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: You were supposed to think that Richard is ungrateful for complaining about his wife not wanting to sleep with him. Plus him being close to cheating on Brenda isn't because he is doing it out of lust. It's because he wasn't satisfied with certain aspects of his marriage. It also helps that he stopped himself from sleeping with Nikki.
