- Hilarious in Hindsight: The concept of bak kwa-flavored chewing gum sounds ridiculous (at least, Crazy Enough to Work) but today? Meat-flavored gum is a thing that exists (though not in Singapore).
- Unintentional Period Piece: The technology, fashion, lingo and choice of pens used by the students (during the exam scene Boon Hock can be seen using a PILOT G2 Gel Pen, an insanely popular brand back when the movie is released) dates the movie right to the early 2000s. Additionally, the 9/11 incident is referenced directly at one point, when Mr. Khoo exclaims (after Terry was rescued from the kidnappers) that the economy is bad enough with "the collapse of those two buildings in New York".
- The Woobie: Kok Pin is arguably the most sympathetic character in the film. Eventually it all pans out for him; his drawing skills not only net him a contest win, but also helped the police catch the culprits behind his friends' kidnapping.
