YMMV / I Belong to the Baddest Girl at School

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: After chapter 44, the Sustained Misunderstanding is clarified and the only thing stopping the Relationship Upgrade is Fuyuhiko's inability to confess his feelings, which is pretty much the driving conflict of the next 33 chapters, more that a few viewers felt the whole conflict was dragged for more that it needed to be and that it simply went for so long for the sake of extending the manga, especially with Matsuri and Tasuku getting their respective Love Ephipany and confessions towards their respective love interests in much more managable gaps by comparison.
  • Badass Decay: Aika's introduction causes this to Kanade, Matsuri and Yutaka, who pass from being the toughest delinquents in the school to being unable to stop the physically weaker Aika from tormenting Fuyuhiko. They recovered it back in Chapter 59 but even then is followed by Kanade having a 10-Minute Retirement.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • Aika, who was despised upon her introduction, has become one of these over time. One side have come to see her as a tragic heroine and a victim of her own Loving Bully nature who, despite recognizing how unhealthy her treatment of Fuyuhiko is and trying to distance herself from him because of it, still can't quite let go of her feelings for her childhood crush. It helps that as we get further into the series we see signs that she really does care about Fuyuhiko, like her saving him from Tzuka or helping him and Kanade clear up their misunderstandings so they can be happy together. Others feel this doesn't make up for the long history of abuse she's put Fuyuhiko through, especially since the series has made such a big deal about how traumatized he is from all the bullying he's suffered, and the fact that she never sincerely apologizes for her actions or ever really stops only makes matters worse. As a result, there are some fans who sympathize with her and hope that she'll find her happy ending, while others groan every time she makes an appearance and just wish she'd be Put on a Bus already.
      • As a Hate Sink in her introductory arc, there's also mixed opinions. Either she was a well executed antagonist or was forced and think that none of the characters (who are notable deliquents) simply intimidating her or beating her up so she stop being a problem is a huge case of everyone catching the Idiot Ball.
    • Fuyuhiko was well loved at first but gained a lot of detractors during the second half of the manga. After he and Kanade discover their whole relationship was caused by a huge misunderstood by both of them, he's left to decide whatever he wants to date Kanade for real or not. The issue is that by this point Fuyuhiko already knows he likes Kanade and that she likes him back, meaning that he doesn't really have any reason not to confess to her, yet he spends the second half of the manga leaving their relationship in a limbo, because he Cannot Spit It Out, frustrating a lot of viewers. Depending on the fan, this is justified because of his insecurities and he manages to be a likable character despite that or you see him as a idiotic wimp that need to man up so he stops causing unnecessary conflict and hurting Kanade for no good reason.
  • Broken Base:
    • Volume 4. It is the point where the polarizing Aika was introduced, but also right before the point the writing took a dive for the worst, leading to mixed opinions for this volume. Depending on who you ask, this is either the last good volume or the beginning of the Seasonal Rot.
    • The final chapters, either they save the series from the Arc Fatigue it was suffering by giving everyone satisfactory send offs or is a case of getting the secondary cast Strangled by the Red String and the resolution of Fuyuhiko and Kanade's relationship was too little, too late.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: The last page of chapter 63 reveals that Miyuki, the little girl Kanade protected from bullies in the park, is Fuyuhiko's sister. You may have suspected this when you first saw her due to their design similarities and the fact Fuyuhiko has mentioned he has a younger sister on several occasions, but she practically spells it out when she talks about her kind and selfless but not very strong older brother, while the camera focuses on a crying rabbit charm that Kanade previously said reminded her of Fuyuhiko. The scanlations for the series didn't even bother trying to hide it, and joked about Fuyuhiko's sister beating him to the punch on his Love Confession several pages before they were actually confirmed to be siblings.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Yutaka, between being the manga's Only Sane Man, being a true friend to Fuyuhiko unlike the rest of the characters beside Kanade, solid queer representation and her attractive design, is safe to say she left quite an impression on readers.
    • Tasuku gained many fans close to the end of the manga's run for confessing to Aika after a few encounters with her which contrasted the Arc Fatigue many felt the main couple was suffering.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: Chapter 14 ends with a gag about how Yutaka has styled her appearance around a comment Matsuri made back in middle school, which the latter has long since forgotten about. It's funny, but it also makes things so much more meaningful when Matsuri tells Yutaka she still remembers her promise to always stay by her side. Sure, she may say a lot of careless things and forget about them, but she'd never forget or break a promise, especially not one she made with her best friend, now her girlfriend.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: A study published in May of 2021, several months after the manga ended, found that female sheep tend to gravitate towards submissive males when choosing a mate. In other words, Aika's feelings towards Fuyuhiko are scientifically accurate to her Animal Motif!
  • Seasonal Rot: The portion of the manga following the clarification of the Sustained Misunderstanding is considered weaker that what came before, mostly because it focus less on the development of Fuyuhiko and Kanade's relationship and the sweet interactions between them and more on Fuyuhiko's inability to confess and the series of contrived situations that avert him to do so which a lot of readers felt it was a dragged and much less entertaining conflict that make the manga became more of an run-of-the-mill romcom lacking the aspects that made the first half a much more unique series. The introduction of Aika didn't help.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Tatsuku randomly decides he likes Aika after having interacted two times at best with her before his confession.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The clarification of the Sustained Misunderstanding happens off-screen, you will think that the characters realizing of something that was the base of the entire plot would be a crucial scene of the series but this is mostly skipped to show us what happens next
