YMMV / I Among Dogs

Go To

  • Adorkable: Nathan can be downright endearing at times due to his semi-otaku interests and his brotherly affection towards Bluey and Bingo.
  • MomentOfAwesome: After being nearly beaten down by Hailey and Daniel, Nathan, after going through some martial arts training with Harley ends up in another fight against the great dane... and wins.
  • Catharsis Factor: Nathan finally getting accepted by the population of Canistralia after being put through quite a hefty amount of discrimination.
    • For some, Wendy scolding Judo for calling Nathan a "thing" and reacting in digust to him can certainly count.
    • Nathan finally getting the upperhand and winning against Hailey's boyfriend in a fight definitely qualifies.
  • Does Not Speak Common: Despite being confirmed as American, Nathan's POV occasionally uses British spelled words. The author took full fault for this, explaining that this error was in part due to him being of British origin.
  • Early-Installment Weirdness: When the first chapter of the story was uploaded, Nathan was originally named "Owen". This was changed however when the author received a DM from another writer whom planned to write a Bluey fanfic involving a character by the same name to avoid readers accusing said writer of plagiarising the character or vice versa.
  • Funny Moments:
    • When Nathan reveals his name to the humans, Bandit's first response is this:
Bandit: "You're not a bunyip, are you?"
    • Nathan first meeting Judo after giving Bingo some first-aid, the Chow Chow runs off screaming.
    • Muffin's very first question to Nathan after he's introduced to her family:
Muffin: "Do coconuts have water in them where you're from?"
    • Bandit randomly barging in on Nathan and Hailey's "date", posing as a Love Doctor, complete with a faux Spanish accent. It takes one glare from Chilli to make Bandit dummy up.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Mackenzie up until the 16th chapter. Yes, he was rather rude and distrusting towards Nathan, but it's hard to not feel sorry for him when he had to witness a violent street war at a young age and was lead to believe that humans were the cause of it. It's only when he (unintentionally) learns the truth that he finally warms up to the human.
  • Moe: The young dogs as a whole, especially Socks due to her undying love towards Nathan.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Hailey crosses this when she reveals her true thoughts to Nathan in the most nastiest way imaginable.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The events of the first two chapters can be absolutely nerve-wracking if you imagine yourself in Nathan's perspective: alone in the wilderness and having to rely on whatever skills you have to ensure survival with zero knowledge of god knows what lurks out at night. Keep in mind that Nathan is fourteen years old.
    • The scene where Nathan finds the skeleton of another human in a cave claimed by tarantulas and Nathan nearly gets bitten by one.
  • Padding: One of the story's very few flaws. At least one or two readers have complained that the chapters are too long and overdetailed.
  • The Scrappy: Hailey becomes this at the climax of the fourteenth chapter after how she treats Nathan after spending the majority of the chapter feigning affection for him. Many of the fanfic's readers did not hesitate to voice their repulse towards her in the reviews, making her possibly one of the most universally despised characters in any Bluey fanwork, especially considering it's heavily implied that she gets away with it. This would be completely averted in the climax of the 17th chapter.
    • Hailey's boyfriend, Daniel qualifies as well due to laughing at Nathan's misery (and later beating Nathan to unconsciousness in a later chapter). Some of the reviews expressing hate towards Hailey have also expressed disgust towards her boyfriend for that reason.
  • The Woobie: Nathan is this to a capital W. Not only does he get separated from his parents (and later discovers their actual fate), but he initially gets alienated from the bipedal dog residents of Canistralia besides the Heeler family and Bluey's friends (except Mackenzie) and his first experience with love goes completely south. Not helped that he's merely a fourteen year old teenager. With so much emotional trauma piled onto him, is it really any wonder why Wendy showed sympathy for him?
  • Writer's Block: Updates on the fanfic have become a lot more sparse due to this. Not helped by the fact that the writer has a few other in-progress fanfics and a YouTube channel to maintain as well.
