YMMV / Hypnagogia

Go To

  • Adorkable: Gogi is an absolutely adorable little rabbit reminiscent of a stuffed animal who dotes on their protectee the Dreamer quite a lot.
  • Anvilicious: It's important not to abandon your dreams even when reality crushes them, as they're what make you, you. Giving them up means sacrificing the part of you that is vigilant, imaginative, and optimistic in the face of all the world's hopeless adversities.
  • Awesome Music: From the Hub Level theme to the Heaven's Gate shopping mall, both the original Hypnagogia and the Boundless Dreams sequel have catchy soundtracks composed in a retro 90s console game style.
  • Breather Level: The bright colors and friendly locals of Candy World (if you find it) are quite soothing, considering the horror-themed levels that precede it.
  • Complete Monster: Grimthorn, from Boundless Dreams, is the embodiment of everything the Dreamer and Gogi "no longer wish to dream of", an envious and spiteful Nightmare Weaver who longs to replace the peaceful dreamscape with an eternal nightmare. Grimthorn poses as an ally to the Dreamer under the alias "Hypno" after having broken the Dream Crystal herself; because of her corruption, entire dream-worlds are corrupted and invaded by nightmares, with their residents either all slaughtered or worse. When she finishes tricking the Dreamer into reassembling the Dream Crystal, Grimthorn betrays them and tries to trap their soul in a "paradise of nightmares", then murders Gogi and casts off the loyal Mimic she had made in Gogi's image into oblivion for failing her.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Trying to flirt with the obviously Tsundere Weird Door throws it off its Riddling Sphinx routine.
    • The Duck bombs that can be found in the Ocarina of Time-inspired Mysterious Forest are a reference to Bombchus from the same game. Its hilarious to see this little rubber ducky bouncing and quacking everywhere before exploding into more rubber duckies.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • The player can choose to hug some of the freezing rabbit folk in Snow World. Several NPCs note just your presence alone has strangely made everything feel a little warmer and more bearable.
    • Reuniting the lonely Dusty and their lovable dog, Biscuit.
    • The sprite in the Mysterious Forest level will kiss the Dreamer, if they tell the truth when asked if they own the lost art gallery key.
    • Agreeing to marry the huge Tsundere that is Weird Door/Thera.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: It only becomes clear after completing Boundless Dreams that Gogi is a kind, loving force for good that prevents the Dreamer from becoming completely nihilistic. The same can also be said for The Dream Catcher working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the terrors of the night and Sleep Paralysis Demons from directly attacking their protectee.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Some of the levels bring to mind Silent Hill, like the Heaven's Gate mall which deteriorates into a Meat Moss and wire fence hellscape. In the Fog World mansion, there's the horrifically grinning monster that chases you down in the basement. In the underwater level in Boundless Dreams, there's the Nightmare Face you get from a Sea Monster shark that swallows you alive before your diving suit fails. Finally, in the haunted school level, the creatures that lurk in the darkness there don't attack you directly, but scrawl ominous messages on the walls telling you to Get Out! and leave this place at once.
  • So Short, It Rocks: The first game is very short, lasting a little more than an hour, but it pulls no punches and makes every minute of the time it has count.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Eden meeting her horrible demise in the maw of the great beast Edax. All she wanted was to protect you and the dreamscape from Edax's desire to consume the entire world.
    • The Dreamer refusing to marry the Weird Door/Thera in the Mysterious Forest dream. You leave her completely heartbroken at the altar, as she crumbles away knowing anything between you was nothing more than a Tragic Dream. The Mushroom World decays to a barren wasteland along with them. The kicker? This is the true decision - as the Tower World later revealed the despairing Dreamer had long abandoned all their hopes and dreams.
    • Gogi's Heroic Sacrifice has his physical form perish in the arms of the Dreamer as they shed a few shining tears.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Because of his treatment at the hands of his abusive mistress, you feel sorry for the broken and bleeding Mimic, even as he plots against you.
  • Woobie Species: The rabbit folk of the Snow/Desert World. You feel their plight in trying to adapt and survive in extremely harsh conditions, yet their best efforts only make life worse for themselves in the long run.
