YMMV / Hush

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: After all the horrible things he does and what a vile, sadistic monster he is, it's enormously gratifying to see Maddie kill The Man by stabbing him in the throat and to see his hubris and sadism give way to genuine fear.
  • Complete Monster: The nameless Serial Killer known as "the Man" is introduced gutting Maddie's neighbor Sarah on Maddie's front steps. When he realizes Maddie is deaf, believing she's easy prey, he torments her relentlessly, with clear intent to torture and rape her if the mood takes him. When Sarah's boyfriend John arrives, the killer murders him too and decides to kill Maddie's cat and nail it to the door. When Maddie fights back, the killer traps her hand in the glass door and brutally stomps on it out of spite for being injured. It is also revealed that he's got at least 12 other victims from similar "outings".
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: John is one of the most badass characters in slasher movie history, quickly figuring out that the killer isn't really a cop, nearly getting the best of him, and still lasting long enough to nearly strangle the bastard to death even after the killer has cut his fucking throat.
  • He Really Can Act: After making a name playing Nice Guys in Spring Awakening, The Newsroom, and 10 Cloverfield Lane, John Gallagher Jr. turns in a horrifying performance as the killer.
  • Love to Hate: The Man is undoubtedly a despicable, horrible excuse for a human being, but thanks to the wonderfully slimy, smug, and chilling performance by John Gallagher Jr., he's easy to hate in the right way.
  • Spiritual Successor: A woman with a disability that eliminates one of the five senses must outwit a sadistic man intent on killing her. Hush can almost be seen as a modern take on Wait Until Dark, with some of the main differences being the heroine of Hush is deaf rather than blind and it's played as a straight-up horror rather than a thriller, with the villain setting out to kill the heroine right from the start.
