YMMV / How I Met Your Father

Go To

  • Crosses the Line Twice: Sid killing his pet hamster, Slim Shady, in a masturbation-related accident is horrible, especially with the animal shrieking in presumed agony as it dies. But then Sid says, "Slim Shady? ...Please stand up."
  • Funny Moments:
    • Sophie's mom, Lori, shows up a week late for Sophie's birthday.
Lori: Well, it was supposed to be today. It's not my fault you came early. Actually, it's a little my fault. They say sex in the third trimester can really move things along.
Sophie: On the plus side, I got to see Woody Harrelson's penis from the inside.
      Lori: He came early, too.
      Sophie: Oh, Mom!
Valentina: This is the worst episode of Gilmore Girls ever.
    • After Ellen gets a date and a job:
Ellen: I bet I'm the most successful lesbian named Ellen in the whole world!
[cue looks from Charlie, Valentina, and Sophie]
      Ellen: ...Oh.
    • After Sophie and Jesse are obliged to try raw bison, they spit it out.
Jesse: Ah! This is so much worse than The Penthouse. This is The Penthouse Chapter 2: The Penthousening.
Sophie: Is that even a real movie?
Jesse: Nikki Hilton was in it, so...no.
    • Towards the end of "Ride or Die", Sid visits Jesse at the concert and the two men repair their friendship. However, their conversation as Old Sophie puts it is in "Bro 2020 speak" so she has to translate it into subtitles.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: One of the major complaints regarding Season 1 is that it's only 10 episodes with its running time around 25 minutes. Because of this, some viewers find the chemistry between the main cast very rushed with little character depth. Fortunately, Season 2 had 20 episodes, which would give more time to develop the cast and their relationship.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Several How I Met Your Mother fans who weren't initially interested in the spinoff ended up watching it after they've learned that some of the original characters returned such as Robin.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: Hilary Duff playing the lead role has led many to see the series as a Lizzie McGuire follow-up series and a substitute for the planned sequel series that Disney pulled the plug on. A clip from Lizzie is even used to portray Sophie's younger self.
  • Squick:
    • In-universe. Sophie's son reacts vehemently when his mom tries to tell him how she and Drew had sex.
    • In "The Good Mom", Sid tells the story of a time he bought a poster of Sophie's mom for the purpose of masturbating to it. His mother walked in just as he was starting, and in an attempt to disguise what he was doing, he accidentally knocked over his lava lamp onto his pet hamster killing him. And then after Sid buried said hamster, he went back to masturbating.
  • Unexpected Character:
    • The Season 1 finale shows the return of a cast member from How I Met Your Mother, Robin Scherbatsky, who listens to Sophie's love story and offers her advice.
      • While they never interact with the main cast, the Captain and Boats!Boats!Boats! play a large role in the events of the season finale.
    • In the Season 2 premiere, another old face shows up at the end of the episode and it's none other than Barney Stinson.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • Jesse's pain over the whole Proposal Fail thing, considering that people are steadily subscribing to the school of thought that public proposals which are not agreed on beforehand are foolish at best and manipulative at worst.
    • Sophie’s issues with Jesse saying he loves her too soon in the final episode rings hollow given the fact that she was perfectly willing to throw away a strong relationship after a single fight in order to be with him. The fact that the season ends on Ian coming back and this being presented as things finally looking up for her makes it seem like she sees these men less as people she has genuine feelings for.
