- Hilarious in Hindsight: A book called "House of [plural noun]" that's about a mysterious location infested with Alien Geometries? Of course, apart from those two things, Stairs and House of Leaves are about as different as you can get.
- Ho Yay: Peter and Oliver for a good chunk of the book. Peter also had a Noodle Incident relationship with another boy, Jasper, who he grew to depend on and was devastated when they were separated. Given that the author himself is gay, this was most likely the intent.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The whole army of Super Soldiers the doctor plans are never seen, nor are the others' role in making it happen, if it does.
