- Contested Sequel: Like Earthling before it, 'hours...' divided fans and critics upon release thanks to its relatively lighter tone and slick pop rock sound, not helped by the fact that Sting had released his similar-sounding album Brand New Day earlier that year (which led to a lot of Bowie/Sting comparisons from the press). Unlike Earthling though, 'hours...' didn't have the benefit of being Vindicated by History, and remains a hair-splitter among Bowie fans.
- They Copied It, So It Sucks!: Much of the criticisms that surrounded this album in its time centered around its similarity to Sting's Brand New Day earlier that year, which featured a similar electronic-tinged pop rock sound.
