• Alternative Character Interpretation: Kimberly Lou Dixon sides with the student protesters and later quits her TV role as Mother Paula, claiming she can't work for a company that's willing to bury baby owls alive just to build a pancake house. Is she sincere when she says it, or was it a PR move because she realized the company's reputation would tank after they were filmed trying to kill an endangered species out of greed? It should be noted she supported the protesters even before there was any proof there were owls on the construction site, suggesting the former.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: In this film, Brie Larson and Clark Gregg do battle with each other. In their next film together, they ended up teaming up.
• Ho Yay: Roy is oddly fascinated with Mullet Fingers from the moment he spots him. He goes out if his way to find out about this kid, gives him some shoes, insists he goes to a hospital when he gets hurt and help him in his plot to save the owls. It doesn’t hurt that they spend lots of time together and the only thing stopping the scenes of them enjoying the nature from looking like them going on dates is the music playing. Saying the book/movie went on to inspire a plethora of Roy/Mullet fanfiction and fan art at the time is an understatement.
• Retroactive Recognition:
  • A pre-Marvel Cinematic Universe Clark Gregg is the Big Bad.
  • Brie Larson became far more recognizable in the decade following the film's release.
  • Logan Lerman would become more famous as Percy Jackson in 2010.
• Unintentional Period Piece: Beatrice lies to an ER doctor that they can’t contact her parents because they work on a crab boat and don’t have phones. In the 2010s, this would be a lot less believable, since everyone now has a smartphone and they're necessary for a lot more than just phone calls.
