YMMV / Honor of Kings

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: Yáo (Global name: Yaria) shares the problem possessed with Shoulder Teammate type heroes (such as Yuumi, Aya or Angela): Either you think she's a cute and useful support that pairs well with just about any hero, or you think that she's a braindead character and that players of her have no skills and solely rely on getting carried by teammates.
  • "Blind Idiot" Translation: Some global server name changes could be out there, but how Jia Luo is rendered into 'Garo' is anyone's guess.
  • Fan Nickname:
    • Even Chinese players affectionally call Lanling Wang 'Batman'. Hilariously, he's ported into Arena of Valor as Batman himself (up until he's replaced by Kaine).
    • Angela, Daji, and Wang Zhaojun (and sometimes, Xiaoqiao too) are nicknamed 'Caocong Sanjiemei' ('草丛三姐妹'), which translates to 'Sisters of the Bushes', due to the above heroes all being mages with high burst damage that lead to their playstyle largely involving waiting around in bushes and insta-killing any unfortunate enemy hero passing by (if they feel like it and the players are competent, they'll also make sure to stunlock the victim to death by creating a rhythm on when they cast their skills).note
    • Shangguan Wan'er's ultimate allows her to fly into the air and deal high damage if she manages to make contact with enemy heroes or her own abilities four times in a row within a time limit. Due to the difficulty of timing the contact, many Wan'er players are unable to successfully finish her ultimate. Wan'ers that can't fly are known as 'Konggao Wan'er' ('恐高婉儿'), which translates to 'Acrophobic Wan'er'.
    • Yang Yuhuan is often given nicknames that touch on how she was supposedly chubby in history, like 'Fat Huan'. Even moreso, occasionally, building her as a tanky mage was considered a legit strategy, that an animated humor cartoon of the game decided to run with it and had Yuhuan temporarily turn into a fatty as a result of building tanky items.
    • During a time when Tencent experimented with an English language option of the game, Kuang Tie's name was rendered as 'Magnus'. That was never his true name, and after the English language option was removed, he's back to his real name again, and his finalized global version name is 'Biron'. However, 'Magnus' ends up being Kuang Tie's very own Fan Nickname, for those who remembered the days or looking for an English-ized named. It helps that story-wise, he's categorized with several non-Chinese characters (with Milady, Marco Polo and Luna). The Global server, despite naming him Biron, still somehow call him Magnus in voice systems.
    • "Zahra" for the S-Dreamer skin of Shangguan Wan'er. Because it's basically a Gender Flip of Zata's skin and they just think of how to 'girlify' Zata's name.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: Lanling Wang and Hua Mulan has a couple skin where Lanling Wang is about to stab Mulan on the neck. Their official relationship? Rivals (Lanling Wang spread the rumors to discredit Mulan in his effort to bring down the Great Wall and get him closer to his revenge).
  • Game-Breaker: When used right, Diao Chan is one of the most deadly mages in the game, with her ultimate allowing her to continuously deal damage while avoiding damage herself. Paired up with Yao, good Diao Chans can single-handedly obliterate the other team at their own core. Her one weakness? She has a severe Magikarp Power, she's as good as useless if she's not allowed to advance to the state where she's obliterating everything (usually with the most expensive mage item available).
    • Da Qiao is the most frequently picked support in tournaments, and for good reason. Her versatile kit allows her to flourish no matter which team has the advantage. With her ability to teleport herself and her teammates back to base in seconds, Da Qiao and her team can easily destroy towers and teleport directly back to base while the enemy team watches helplessly. She still remains a threat even after a severe nerf where she ended up being limited in how many heroes she can teleport back to base in one go, and that they don't instantly recover all lost HP (something that her Arena of Valor counterpart still retained).
  • Goddamned Bats: Gui Guzi by himself won't be murdering you personally. However, he can turn his party invisible and he has an extremely hard crowd control that came with a big warning sign, if you ignore him as he approaches your team, he will pull all of you to near him and leaving you ripe from being nuked by the enemy team or preventing your escape. In other words, seeing Gui Guzi suddenly pop up and running to you with a circle surrounding him can turn your day upside down in instant even if he doesn't personally kill you, because you would end up having to concentrate your fire on him or else he ruins your day.note
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Hou Yi did not make an appearance in Journey to the West, and Zhu Bajie's origin story was that he was cast out from heavens for flirting on Chang'e, Hou Yi's wife. Let's just say in this game, you can make Hou Yi take offense on Bajie's flirting on his wife and actually act on it.
  • Memetic Loser:
    • Genghis Khan has been in the game for five years, and still hasn't received a single high-tier skin. He is often depicted begging the devs for skins and crying when heroes that have been in the game for less time than him receive skins. Furthering this is that he's set to be the last hero to be replaced with his own Arena of Valor counterpart (Lindis) in the global version because for some reason certain countries still held ill-will about him being the Scourge of God.
    • Li Bai and Han Xin usually are not examples in the Chinese version as they're well respected and enjoy a lot of fan and creator love. However, amongst the international crowd, they somehow enter this territory because they're the only heroes whose Arena of Valor counterparts (Murad and Nakroth, respectively) are way too OP compared to themselves. As a rule, Arena of Valor counterparts are often considered 'nerfed' from their Honor of Kings selves. Not for these two: Han Xin's travel speed is considered slower than Nakroth so he's less powerful in surprise attack and burst, and Li Bai cannot gain stack by dashing to an empty spot unlike Murad.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • Masochistic Cheng Yaojin.note
    • Gusion X Nananote
    • Sell your kidney for Wu Zetian.note
  • Moe:
    • A lot of support-type heroes are designed with adorable big eyes and sweet personalities, namely Yao, Cai Wenji, and Sang Qi. And then there's Japan's top Moe character, Nakoruru, guesting...
    • Xi Shi. While the Four Beauties of Ancient China are mostly portrayed as beautiful, Xi Shi is instead designed to be a teenage school girl who has elements of a sweet, easygoing Girl Next Door. She still looks both beautiful and cute in the same time (thanks to her adorable voice), thus she's also the hero who's on the right age of being a 'waifu material' amongst many viewers.
  • Obscure Popularity: As a mobile game, this is one of the definitive games that defined a generation, but most of the popularity are contained in China, the game's usage of less-mainstream Chinese figures become a factor on the trope and why it's never going to be exported outside, leaving Arena of Valor to do that job. Like, you may recognize the likes of Hua Mulan, Diao Chan or maybe Wu Zetian amongst the women, or Lu Bu and Sun Wukong. But which mainstream audience are going to recognize the likes of Su Lie, Bai Qi, Lao Fu Zi or Shangguan Wan'er amongst others? Or heck, the other Four Beauties of Ancient China aside of Diao Chan?note . The international version's announcement may alleviate this, though.
  • Ships That Pass in the Night: The couple skins are usually reserved for Official Couple (or at times, Foe Yay Shipping), but sometimes, they get paired with someone absolutely with no relations, such as Sun Wukong-Luna or Li Bai-Wang Zhaojun. Doesn't stop people from thinking that they're actually the official couples of the game.
  • Shocking Moments: For the longest time, players are resigned that the Closest Thing They Got for an international version of the game is Arena of Valor, there's no way they're gonna bring the game in the states. Then suddenly, it happened: Honor of Kings international version is coming! While not replacing Arena of Valor!
  • Unexpected Character:
    • People expected a full on port for the global release, but no one expected Ata and Lumburr to be in the roster, replacing their predecessors (Zhu Bajie and Niu Mo).note
    • One-upping that: The announcement that Allain will make a jump to the game, starting with the Chinese version. Without replacing anyone.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Many new players confuse Sun Bin and Sang Qi to be girls due to their adorable designs. Sun Bin even lampshades his feminine appearance in a voice-line, so at least for him, it was an intentional design choice by the devs. Inversely, a lot will confuse Ah Gu Duo as a young boy, when she's actually a young girl.
